3 days/ 2 nights
In the cold of the Cusco morning you step on a small airplane that flies you over the Andes, to the small landing strip of Boca Manu. Your hosts, an English speaking guide and a Yine guide, are waiting for you at the side of the landing strip to take you to the attractive and comfortable bungalows of the Yine Lodge.
After settling in, you meet with the guides in the Restaurant, who will explain everything you need to know about the lodge and the Yine Tour Programme and will give you an introduction to Yine Culture, while you sip a refreshing welcome drink.
In the afternoon, the two guides take you on a hike to Cocha (which means lake) Mapchiri. Along the way, the English speaking guide not only explains the western concepts of rainforest ecology, but also translates the Yine guide's explanations and interpretations. On arrival at the Mapchiri, listen to the story of the lake, so called because it is said to be home to a giant Anaconda, the protective spirit of the Amazon!
Tonight and tomorrow night, your English speaking guide will be available in the restaurant to serve as interpreter and translater in case you would like to talk with your Yine guide or any other of the Yine people present.
This morning you take a hike with both of your guides along the trail that leads from the Yine Lodge to the Yine Community of Diamante. As you pass a variety of habitats, the Yine guide points out various significant plants and trees and their special uses and meanings.
When you arrive at the village, you are welcomed with a cup of their special drink, 'masato', which is made from fermented yuca. The tour of the village illustrates the virtues of rainforest life, as well as the problems facing a people caught between the values of their own traditions and the encroaches of western culture.
Led by Lola Trigoso, one of the finest Yine artisans, several Yine women offer to paint your arm (or head) with traditional Yine designs and explain their traditional meaning.
In the afternoon, you return to the Lodge in a spectacular way: each of you has a little dugout canoe, with paddler, waiting to take you down the Alto Madre de Dios River. The Yine have long been known as savvy boatmen, able to read the implications of every little swirl and swell of the river. Of course, you can give it a try as well! However, just to be on the safe side, you will be wearing a life vest, and a motorised canoe will be following at a distance. Your will arrive at your destination after approximately two hours.
This morning, Yine artisans will be present at the lodge, inviting you to participe in a workshop on traditional ceramics. You will learn how the Yine shape and paint their ceramics and how to make your own, if you would like to do so.
Before ending the trip, you can test your aim with a bow and arrow under the instructions of a Yine teacher. A set of authentic bow and arrows, constructed by Yine craftsmen, will be awarded to the most able participant. Around midday the light aircraft takes you back to Cusco.
